Happy Birthday 'MURICA!

Happy Birthday ‘MURICA!

JOE would like to wish all of our American cousins a very happy 4th of July and to mark this day we have decided to take a look at some of our favourite moments involving America’s most famous holiday over the years from the worlds of sport and entertainment.

USA 0-1 Brazil – July 4, 1994

Exactly 20 years ago today, the hosts USA were eliminated from the ’94 World Cup by Brazil. Much like Jurgen Klinsmann’s side in Brazil, the US team in ’94 weren’t expected to get out of a tough group that also contained Colombia, Romania and Switzerland but they did. Alexi Lalas, Cobi Jones and Tony Meola et all made themselves cult heroes, not just for their hair. Bebeto’s late goal broke American hearts but the cultural impact that USA ’94 had on the country was vital for the growth of the game. Relive it here.

Jaws

JOE thinks that Jaws is one of the greatest films that has ever been made. We have already discussed just how important it still is now, but the Spielberg classic was actually set over the 4th of July weekend. Despite being Irish, JOE will still definitely be staying out of the water today.

July 4th

Independence Day Speech

We are fairly sure that Rafa Benitez and Joe Schmidt gave the exact same speech at half time during the ’05 Champions League final and the ’11 Heineken Cup final, respectively. Just swap Johnny Sexton and Steven Gerrard with Will Smith and the two games are exactly the same as the movie. Right?

The Simpsons Celebrate…

From now on, this is how we celebrate any holiday. In Homer we trust.

Charlie Kelly gets American

If you need to get into the spirit of the day then this is for you. We have it on good authority that Tim Howard was listening to this speech on repeat before his epic performance against Belgium.
