JOE’s Classic Song of the Day: Doves – Pounding

A festival anthem

Eric Lalor

A festival anthem.

Artist, album and year: Doves, The Last Broadcast, 2002

Why is it a classic?: It’s just a great rock ‘n’ roll song. Doves are the classic indie band from Manchester who have had both critical and commercial success. They have had two albums which topped the UK Albums charts with their offerings, The Last Broadcast and Some Cities.

This song is called Pounding and the intro to it us just that. It is basically the drummer, Andy Williams absolutely pounding the drums relentlessly and continues throughout it’s entirety.

The brilliant vocals of Jimmy Goodwin are as heartfelt and honest as ever here as he wraps this delicious, infectious melody around your ear hole and into your brain.

It’s a stomp your feet, feel uplifted kinda song and a music festival favourite. There are few better sights in live music than seeing hordes of revelers congregating around a stage as Doves belt out this classic.

Did You Know? The song was used in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics advertisement campaign and in pre-event intros.

The lyrical hook: ” We so down, but it’s now or never baby, we don’t mind, if this don’t last forever, see the light, but it won’t last forever, seize the time, cause it’s now or never baby….”
