Earphones in, world out, volume up, adrenalin pumping…

JOE continues our look at some of our favourite classic songs with a tribute to one of the best heavy metal bands and songs that we’ve ever heard.

Artist, album and year: Metallica, Metallica, 1991

Why is it a classic? : What other band could create a song that’s eerily similar in its composition to a children’s lullaby and make it just as capable of scaring and electrifying 80,000 people?

Like all iconic rock anthems, the opening few chords are instantly recognisable because they’re so ominous, haunting and sinister.

The moment when Lars Ulrich’s drum kicks in will probably get your blood and adrenalin pumping to such a ferocious level that you’ll feel capable of punching a T-Rex in the face before running through a brick wall.

Those three rhythm guitar tracks of the same riff have become an iconic sound in the history of rock ‘n roll although Ulrich has since described the tune as a “one-riff song”, in which all of its sections originate from the main part credited to Kirk Hammett.

The anthem has since been named as one of Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Songs of All Time while the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have categorised it as a song that shaped rock.

Music lovers, regardless of their specific tastes, will have to agree that it’s an absolutely superb track.

Did you know? : The song has been used countless times as the intro music for specific teams and athletes such as ; Louisville Cardinals, the New York Yankees, Bradford Bulls, Virginia Tech, wrestlers Brock Lesnar and The Sandman amongst others.

The lyrical hook: “Exit, light, Enter, night, Take my hand, We’re off to never-never land”.
