JOE’s Classic Song of the Day: The Flamingos – I Only Have Eyes for You

Effortlessly cool

Paul Moore

Effortlessly cool.

Artist, album and year: The Flamingos, Flamingo Serenade, 1959

Why is it a Classic? : This cover version of the 1934 original has been heralded as a definitive track in the cannon of doo-wop songs and rightfully so.

The seductive pace and tempo make it one of the most hypnotic slow songs of all-time and the brilliant use of reverb and echo only add to its dreamy ambience.

The song has that wonderful ‘3am quality’ to it where anyone listening to it can’t help but drift away and be lost in its charms.

The array of vocal work on the track is stunning as the band stay in perfect harmony throughout while the rhythmic piano just carries you from the first note to the last.

Smooth, silky and stellar.

Did you Know? : This version ranked at #157 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The lyrical hook: “You are here and so am I, Maybe millions of people go by, But they all disappear from view, And I only have eyes for you”.
