JOE's Style Icons - Marcello Mastroianni
An Italian man who's incredibly stylish? Surely it can't be true...
Following this week's worldwide launch of HTC’s most beautifully designed phone yet, the HTC One m8, we continue our evolution of style series by looking at one of the most stylish men to ever grace the silver screen: Marcello Mastroianni. He starred in movies like La Dolce Vita and 8½, but will definitely be remembered for the fact that he oozed effortless cool both on and off screen.
The secret to his style was that it was timeless. Although the fits might have changed slightly or the lapels might be a bit wider than we'd see today, he still put together pieces that you could (and should) have in your wardrobe now without any bother.
He starred along side some of the most famous actresses in the history of cinema too, like Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren and a whole host of others, and his charisma and charm, coupled with his keen sense of style, made him an icon for generations to come.
It also helps that he was pretty good at what he did, having been nominated for an Academy Award three times, as well as being one of very few to be named best actor at Cannes twice. After his death in 1996, the iconic Trevi fountain in Rome was switched off and draped in black as a mark of respect, which is an indication of the regard in which he was held in his native Italy.
