One of the most famous fashion brands the world has ever seen, Yves Saint Laurent became best known for his amazing designs

Following this week’s worldwide launch of HTC’s most beautifully designed phone yet, the HTC One m8, we continue our evolution of style series by looking at one of the most famous clothing designers that the world has ever known Yves Saint Laurent.

With a new movie set to launch in the coming weeks telling the story of how 21-year-old Yves became an international superstar as the successor to Christian Dior, there’s no better time to cast our minds back and remember the impact that he has had on men’s fashion throughout the ages.

As a young designer, he showed talent from an early age, winning competitions and even catching the eye of Vogue‘s editor at the time Michel de Brunhoff, who encouraged him to pursue his gift to fruition. He studied at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture and eventually was hired by another of the world’s most famous designers to work at the House of Dior, where he became lead designer at an incredibly young age.

His collections were innovative and daring, which brought him into conflict with the heads of the House, and he eventually moved out on his own to start the now world-famous YSL brand. Perhaps his most significant contribution was to make a ready-to-wear line, bringing high fashion to the masses, and also bringing the fashion of the street to the catwalk.

He made use of leather jackets (now a wardrobe essential for any man) and pea coats, not normally pieces that one expected to see in the world of haute couture, and began designing a range of menswear based on his own wardrobe, which was classic, timeless and simple.

Even in his absence, the label that the designer left behind after his death in 2008 is still one of the most important and recognisable names in fashion, and a staple at every major fashion week around the world, proving that innovative design will never go out of style.
