What is it? Paintings, statues, conceptual pieces – you get the idea. So what will one of the big guns cost you? "Interchange" by Willem de Kooning is the most expensive painting ever sold and it cost €266 million in 2016.
How long would €300 million last? Well, if you go straight for "Interchange," and factor in inflation, you’re not going to have too much change. Still, you can always splash out on a few limited edition prints to complete your collection.
Cheaper alternative: Stick a poster of an expensive painting in a frame. It’s basically the same thing with a lower house insurance premium.
What is it? The most expensive bottle of white wine is Chateau d'Yquem (1811), a single bottle of which was sold for €86,000 in 2011. It would want to be pretty tasty...
How long would €300 million last? You could theoretically pick up 3500 bottles at that price, although you should probably reconsider your drinking habits if you’re clocking up that kind of bill at the off-licence.
Cheaper alternative: Don’t spend silly money on something that’s probably going to be corked when you open it.
What is it? SpaceX has agreed to take two passengers around the moon, a round trip that would take approximately a week to complete. This would be the ultimate one-upmanship on any of your friends who keep going on about their travels.
How long would €300 million last? The trip is expected to cost in the region of €71 million, so you’ll get at least four moon trips out of it. Or you could bring three mates if you’re feeling generous.
Cheaper alternative: You can probably pick up a telescope for €50. Point it at the moon and just use your imagination.
