Love isn’t blind…drunk : Research shows that falling in love makes it harder to get drunk

If you like drinking then never fall in love

If you like drinking then never fall in love

Have you ever been in a situation where you’re in the same room as a couple that are in love but you feel more awkward than a person that has just farted in mass?

Just us? Ok then.

Part of the reason why it’s awkward to be the third wheel on a Saturday night in the presence of a lovey dovey couple is that they aren’t always on the same wavelength in terms of drinking habits.

Single people who’re looking for love might find that a few drinks helps smooth over any potential shyness and scientists have actually proven that they’re more likely to be suffering a hangover the next day also.

Now for the boring science part.

When you’re in love the brain secretes a chemical named oxytocin which is an incredibly important mammalian neurohypophysial hormone that creates the feelings of intimacy and love.

Wow we feel smarter even writing that sentence.

A recent study at the University of Sydney in Australia has proven that people in love are less likely to feel the effects of a few scoops, pints, jars, tins, rinses or  glasses.

Scientists gave young male adult male an infusion of oxytocin and then administered a dose of alcohol roughly equivalent to a human drinking a bottle of wine over a few hours.

They also gave other test subjects a dose of alcohol but nothing else.

The results showed that the group of rats that got no oxytocin were clearly drunk, they were wobbling from side to side, passing out and had difficulty performing even the simplest of tasks.

Sound familiar?

The other rats, those that were administered oxytocin, showed virtually no signs of intoxication and had no ‘rat hangover’ to deal with.

We thought this was pretty interesting research but then again, we’re certain that some people who have a boyfriend/girlfriend also feel the effects of a pretty bad hangover also.

At least you have someone to make you tea though. Tea always helps.
