The man of course asked the internet to be his jury
A man has asked the internet to be his jury after going on a solo trip without his girlfriend because she ‘couldn’t afford it.’
The person took to Reddit’s ‘Am I The A**hole’ thread to express his concern over his actions (not a great start) in an attempt to understand other people’s thoughts on his actions.
The user took to the thread to explain that he had upset his girlfriend of six years his junior after the “topic of [his] birthday came up”.
As he would be turning 40-years-old next year, the user wanted to celebrate properly by going on a real holiday after never experiencing an “actual vacation” that has never lasted more than three days or not been to visit friends or family.
He divulged further that the trip was on his bucket list and he had ‘put money aside’ and that after building up a ‘decent business’ he felt “ready for a trip and next year would be a great opportunity.”
Well, that sounds all lovely and jolly, what could spoil that?
Probably not taking your girlfriend.
The man wrote that his other half “doesn’t make as much money” as he does and that she is currently $20k (£15.2k) in credit card debt following on from a period of unemployment.
Regardless of this issue, when the matter arose, the girlfriend asked to tag along on the holiday, suggesting Vegas as she stated that anything international would be too expensive for her.
The man in question offered to pay for where they would be staying as well as the flights, however drew the line at paying for the entire thing, seeing as they had only been dating three months.
The holiday-hoping man had dreamed of a trip to the Caribbean, but this looked unlikely as his girlfriend admitted she could not even pay for half of the flight price or food.
Seeing as the girlfriend would not be able to go with him, the boyfriend told her he would still go by himself, at which point she became upset.
The user said it “caused a bit of a fight” that he was fine travelling without her.
The man also consulted his family (probably wiser than the internet) about the matter to which he said they were split on the matter.

Some referenced a controlling ex and urged him to “do what he wants to do”, while others said it was “cruel to be planning a vacation in front of a person who is trying to pay off large amounts of debt anyway.”
Turning to Reddit for advice, the internet had plenty to say, although surprisingly nicer things than what you might expect.
One person said: “Red flag. You’ve been with her for only 3 MONTHS so far and she’s already sulking for you not footing the entire bill for a trip for YOUR milestone birthday NEXT YEAR?”
Another wrote: “Person $20k in debt wants to go to Vegas. Perfect.
“Please go on your trip. It’s not cruel to anyone.”
Meanwhile someone else commented: “Three months and she expects you to either pay for her to go on an international, week-long vacation or change your long-term, bucket-list plans to suit her?
Well there you have it, the internet jury has spoken and ruled in favour of the man who just wants a bit of sun to celebrate his 40th birthday, who knows if he’ll ever make it there though.
