Mayo Monday is now a thing and it aims to be even bigger than the famous Donegal Tuesday

Paul Moore

Eyre Square will be hopping.

Donegal might have edged out Mayo in the 2012 All-Ireland Final, but when it comes to public displays of love for your county, The Yew County are looking to exact a measure of revenge on their near rivals.

In terms of recent and eclectic Irish traditions, the massive popularity of Donegal Tuesday has been a very interesting development. What does this day involve? Well, basically during Galway RAG week, a bunch of students wear Donegal jerseys and head to the nearest pub in Galway, usually the Hole in the Wall.

In some cases, people were even queuing from as early as 8am.

So, what makes Mayo Monday any different? Allow JOE reader Gerry Salla to point out the obvious because “Mayo Monday is a day that is all things Mayo!”

There’s an event page created for the festivities and we’re reliably informed that last year’s Mayo Monday event was a major success with plenty of people donning the famous red and green jerseys in Galway.

This year the event is being held on the 13th of February, so mark the date if you’re a patriotic son or daughter of Mayo.

Gerry says : “Last year , the city was absolutely buzzing with Mayo jerseys from 9am right up until 5am the next day. The event had 1,700 people in attendance, but this year, we’re hoping to get even more people.

In what’s intended to instigate a friendly bit of rivalry, we told that the organisers of Mayo Monday will be hoping to “leave a lasting legacy” while simultaneously making the event even “bigger than Donegal Tuesday…if possible!”

To the people of Mayo and Donegal, the marker has been thrown down. Do your county proud, in a  responsible manner of course!
