Heroes, one and all.

What makes a magical TV moment? It can be a brilliantly scripted piece of acting or a genuinely moving piece of documentary work.

Or it can just be a messer who seizes their moment and turns their few seconds of fame into an iconic TV moment. We’ve combed through the Irish TV archives to dig out some classic moments that were inspired by Irish messers.

1. Blue Steel on the Late Late

This is how you seize the moment. He gets the nudge, composes himself for a second, then unleashes a serious bit of Blue Steel on an unsuspecting nation. Legend.

2. Irish guy tells Fresh Prince story on Psychics Online

These psychics might be able to tell you what’s happening on the “other side” but they obviously don’t know their 90s TV intros.

3. Ice cream man on the news

Nothing to see here. Just a lad having an ice cream and staring at a reporter. He’s certainly enjoying that 99.

4. “Daniel” inspires brilliant audience member reaction

Mario Rosenstock impersonating Daniel O’Donnell does not in itself make for great TV. What does make for great TV is the response his performance inspires in one audience member. In the course of this clip, her reactions cover excitement, disbelief, shock, confusion, disgust, anger and – eventually – acceptance.

5. Horsing around at the Galway Races

Ah, the Galway Races. Sure where else would you be video-bombed by a guy in a horse’s head mask?

6. Audience member’s amazing sign on Winning Street

Best. Sign. Ever.

7. The O’Donovan Brothers

From the Olympics to the Graham Norton Show, they’ve won us over with their unique interviews. This famous one from the 2016 Olympics turned them into stars and introduced us to the phrase “Pull like a dog”!
