A non-profit museum of Irish history is now one of the best in Europe

Fantastic achievement and a great visit.

If you’re ever in Dublin’s city centre and looking for something to occupy your time, we highly recommend a visit to the Little Museum of Dublin on Stephen’s Green because it frequently provides an incredibly interesting range of topics, stories and periods of Irish history.

Unlike other museums, the Little Museum of Dublin caters to the more ‘traditional’ approach of learning about Irish history. For example, at the moment, they’re offering a brief lesson about life in Dublin through the decades, the story of U2, a retrospective on the role that women played in shaping Ireland, and an exhibition which pays tribute to the explorers, tycoons and hare-brained eccentrics who were our pioneering aviators.

History encompasses everything – politics, arts, sports, science, culture – and the Little Museum of Dublin perfectly encapsulates that.

We’re absolutely delighted to say that for the second year in a row, the Little Museum of Dublin has won the TripAdvisor Travelers Choice Award for 2018. It also features in the top 20 museums in Europe for the first time, alongside major cultural icons like the Prado, the Louvre and the Acropolis.

Founded on a budget of just €40,000, the Little Museum was created entirely by public donation. To put this achievement into context, the non-profit museum is now ranked above the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Speaking about this achievement, museum chairman Brody Sweeney said: “Today, as we celebrate the museum’s seventh birthday, we also celebrate this major international award. It’s a tremendous achievement for the museum staff, but also for the people of Dublin, because this museum is a gift to the city from itself. Our collection was created entirely by public donation, so our success is really due to the generosity of our fellow Dubliners, as well as the vision of our patrons in Dublin City Council and the Department of Culture.”

Congratulations to all involved.
