New York Knick JR Smith is reported to have spent €450,000 on a ‘car’ known as the Gurkha, made famous by Fast Five.

If you thought a Range Rover, or even a Hummer was too understated, then this is the vehicle for you. If you saw Fast Five, then you will know all about the Gurkha, or the Gurkha F5 Armoured Vehicle to give it its full title.

Manufactured by Terradyne in Canada, it was driven by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in Fast Five and costs a cool $450,000 (€335,000). Weighing 8.6 tonnes and measuring 18 feet long, seven feet wide and just over eight feet tall, it has a 6.7 litre, V8 diesel engine and aside from movie cameos, the vehicle is usually only purchased by armies and police forces around the globe.

Now that elite group is reported to have been joined by JR Smith, the Sixth Man of the Year last year. As he pulls in $6m a year, we reckon he can afford the tax and insurance but we do wonder how practical a car it is to drive around the streets of New York…

However, JR has a great reason as to why he needs a car more suited to a battle field than a big city.

Fair enough…
