New Wheels on the Block: 5 cars you need to know about this week

It’s an Americana showdown this week

Oisin Collins

For our latest New Wheels on the Block, we take a look at two very interesting, but very different Golf GTIs, two brand-spanking new American muscle cars and a Spanish estate that’s making waves in Germany – the Nürburgring, to be precise.

Golf GTE Sport Concept

We do love a good concept car here at JOE, and VW’s latest is a sight to behold. The VW Golf GTE Sport Concept is set to feature a plug-in hybrid 1.6L engine that produces a fairly hefty 400hp when combined with two electric motors.

The stunning Golf GTE Sport Concept features a really cool driver-focused cockpit and it’s quick off the line too, with VW saying the GTE Sport can reach 100km/h in 4.3 seconds, while the top speed is 280km/h. Now that’s quick…

Our second Golf GTI on the block this week is the Golf GTI Clubsport. The Golf GTI will be 40-years in production next year and to mark the occasion, VW are bringing out a special edition that’s set to look very slick…

The pictures here show the Golf GTI Clubsport concept, but the production version isn’t expected to change too much. The Clubsport edition will come with a 2.0L turbocharged that produces 265hp.

Ford Mustang

We’ve been lucky enough to drive the all-new Ford Mustang here at JOE (read our review here) and it’s undoubtedly one of the best cars we’ve tested for the site.

The new Mustang has been built with European drivers in mind meaning the car is greener than previous generations, features better suspension and, most importantly, it’s available in right hand drive.

The Mustang will be available for the very first time in Ireland from November with prices starting at just €46,000. This is one pony we’d love to own.

Chevy Camaro

Hot on the heels of the release of the new Ford Mustang comes the all-new Chevrolet Camaro. Like the Mustang, the new Camaro has been somewhat downsized to cut down on emissions and to focus on getting the most out of the engine.

The new Camaro isn’t coming over to our shores anytime soon, which is a pity as it boasts some impressive stats.

The new Camaro features a naturally aspirated 3.6-litre V6 making 335bhp, while the top spec SS Camaro will come with a huge 6.2-litre ‘LT1′ V8. Now that’s something we’d love to hear roar…

SEAT Leon ST CUPRA

Last but not least for this week’s New Wheels on the Block is the story of a lengthy Spaniard that has set a new record on one of the most famous racing tracks in the world.

The SEAT Leon ST CUPRA has proven its sporty performance with its ground-breaking record time of 7:58.12 minutes around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, achieved for the first time by the Spanish racing driver and SEAT brand ambassador Jordi Gené.

SEAT claims that this makes the Leon ST Cupra is the fastest estate car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Just imagine taking the kids to school in that…
