New Wheels on the Block: 5 new cars you need to know about

This week we look at five cars we could actually afford in our lifetime… (no Ferrari’s this week).

Skoda Superb

A lot of people used to make fun of Skoda, for one reason or another (they’ve even taken the p*ss out of themselves on occasion), but they’ve since upped their game and are now regarded as one of the fastest growing car brands in Europe. The Czech company recently unveiled the latest version of its flagship model, the Superb and we have to say, it looks absolutely stunning. While we absolutely love the new look of the Superb you can’t deny that it does look a lot like an Audi from the side profile – not that that’s a bad thing.

Ford Focus

Good news Ford fans! The hugely popular hatchback has just received a new facelift and it’s currently on sale in Ireland from €20,295. Buyers will have a choice between three diesel engines and two petrol engines, as well as the choice of three different body types. The newly updated Focus is available in hatchback, saloon and estate.

DS 5 (it’s NOT a Citroen)

If you’re a fan of Citroen cars then you’ve probably heard of the DS. In recent years, the letters DS would only appear on the most refined Citroens. However, Citroen has decided to let DS fly the coop as it’s own standalone brand. If you’re still a bit confused (it took us awhile to get our heads around it) then think of like this: Lexus is to Toyota as DS is to Citroen. Are you still with us? So there you have it. The brand new Citroen DS 5. It’s going to take us awhile to get used to it…

Hyundai Tucson

Forget the Hyundai ix35, as the Korean car company has decided to revive the old Tucson name ahead of the Geneva Motor Show, which kicks off at the start of March. Hyundai say the Tucson will come equipped with loads of safety features and a choice between two petrol engines (135hp or 176hp 1.6L) and three diesel (115hp 1.7L, 136hp 2.0L and the high-powered 184hp 2.0L).

Peugeot 208 update

Like the Ford Focus, the Peugeot 208 has always been a favourite among Irish drivers and the mini-hatchback has just received a new update in the form of a new grille and new lights. Okay, so it’s not the most monumental of updates, but it’s a great looking car and according to Peugeot their new 1.6L 75hp BlueHDi can achieve a whopping 94 miles per gallon (40km per litre). Now THAT is something we’d love to see.
