The New York Times has taken quite a shine to Cork

Michael Lanigan

Cork people are going to love this.

The New York Times sent their travel writer Brendan Spiegel into the heart of Cork as part of their ’36 Hours in…’ series, and those of you from the Rebel County will be very pleased with the results.

Trawling through the county’s array of coffee houses and multicultural food offerings, checking out nanobreweries and Nano Nagle’s heritage centre in between, he found that Cork is one of Ireland’s most overlooked treasures. He did however, come down a little harsh on the dietary habits of every other county, writing,

“Soppy curry fries are lapped up nightly in many a pub throughout Ireland, but the authentic South Indian cuisine on hand at Iyer’s (in Shandon) is something altogether different.”

While he may have had a slight pop at our chippers, Spiegel hasn’t a bad word to say about our cooking. He fell in love with the fish and chips at Bulman, and raves about getting a much sought-after stool at the Japanese restaurant Miyazaki. What’s more, he might teach some locals a thing or two about the greatness in their own back-yard, giving out a few fine pointers when it comes to grabbing a drink.

In particular, Spiegel heaped praise on the Kinsale restaurant Bastion where someone came up with the idea to serve Prosecco on tap.

It’s far from Prosecco on tap we were reared, but we’ll take it.

The whole thing paints a wonderful picture of Cork and it’s surrounding areas. Kinsale, in particular, gets a glowing review.
