The Northern Lights put on a spectacular show in the skies over Donegal

The hills were alight.

Northern Lights

What a sight.

Ireland isn’t exactly renowned as one of the best vantage points to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights, but occasionally, events conspire to allow us to witness one of the most spectacular sights on the planet.

Weather warnings have been bandied about so much in the last week that they’re in danger of going out of fashion, but if there was a window of clear weather where you were on Wednesday night, the Aurora was visible, according to BBC weatherman Barra Best, as far south as Tipperary.

A little further to the north in Ballyshannon, Kenneth McDonagh of the Donegal Weather Channel captured a timelapse just as darkness began to fall over the county last night.

Despite showers falling overhead and a fair bit of cloud to contend with, keep an eye out for the tints of green light that regularly appear in the background of the video below (if you’re watching this early in the morning, you might want to turn the sound down).

Beautiful.

Cheers to Kenneth McDonagh for sending this our way. If you have something you would like to share with us, send it to [email protected] or hit us up on Facebook or Twitter.
