WATCH: NUIG Student President wannabe raises the bar with inspired, Trainspotting-themed campaign video

An awful lot of effort went into this and it was well worth it.

A few years’ back, you might remember a video made by a candidate for the presidency of the University of Limerick Students’ Union, Tommy Bolger.

Based on The Wolf of Wall Street, which had just been released at the time, it went incredibly viral and made a star out of Bolger, for a brief period at least.

If that video set the bar as far as Students’ Union presidential candidates are concerned, then it has just been raised by Lorcán Ó Maoileannaigh, who is one of the candidates for the presidency of the NUIG Students’ Union, with elections taking place this Thursday, March 2.

Using the opening sequence to Trainspotting as a guide, Lorcán and his associates recreate some of the most iconic scenes from said opening sequence, with some of the points of his own manifesto replacing Ewan McGregor’s famous ‘Choose Life’ speech as the backing track.

Lorcán says it took “four days of filming, five cameras, two soaked sets of clothes, one dented car, one Go Pro, countless hours of editing and voiceovers all for this one campaign video” but the finished product would suggest that it was all worth it.

How much of an impact the campaign video had won’t become clear until Thursday and for more information on this week’s ballot, check out the NUIG Students’ Union website.
