Our guide to making the daily grind more bearable

The daily grind doesn’t have to be so grim

Especially during the winter when it most of your daylight hours are spent in work, working life can be boring. Getting up at the same time, clocking in, clocking out and coming home often feels like an endless cycle.

Fret not, as there plenty of easy ways to give you more of a spring in your step. From just mixing up your routine to having more time for yourself, hopefully it’ll help you avoid feeling too stressed.

Large companies like Intel Ireland are leading the charge when it comes to making sure their employees don’t end up feeling like this…

Daily grind

Mix it up on your commute

If the worst part of your day is spending a lot of time on public transport, there are ways to make it more varied. If you find yourself listening to the same songs, look up a playlist on Spotify like “Morning Commute,” which has 52 songs hand-picked for the job.

Try to find a podcast that you’re interested in, as they are proven to help people stay more focused. Listening intently to someone telling a story rather than seeing it play out in front of you means you have to rely on your own imagination.

Work out in the morning

This might only be possible if you have a short commute, but getting a workout done first thing can set your day up nicely. It keeps you in shape, and working out triggers a release of endorphins, which are hormones that make you feel happier.

They’re also found in chocolate, but we’re definitely not suggesting that as an alternative…

Some larger companies like Intel Ireland have dedicated fitness centres on-site, so that certainly makes it easier to get a workout done!

Daily grind

Reward yourself

Work often feels like a series of endless tasks, but it’s important to reward yourself for a job well done. It could be as simple as buying your favourite snack, or saying you won’t buy something until you’ve reached a certain target.

Basically, just put a carrot at the end of a stick to try and push yourself to be more productive!

Say ‘yes’ to work outings

Yes, the temptation when it comes to work is to bolt out the door once your shift is finished. While that’s understandable, becoming more comfortable with your co-workers will make it easier to come in every morning.

Whenever you get the chance to do something with colleagues outside of working hours, go for it. That’s assuming you don’t just try to silently sneak out of the office every day.

Daily grind

Cycle to work

Another option that is only available to some, but certainly one to consider. You’ll get that post-workout endorphins boost, and don’t have to rely on any timetables to get to the office.

If unpredictable weather puts you off, just wear workout gear on the way in and bring a change of clothes. Blowing off steam with a cycle is exactly what you need to get you in the right frame of mind.

Intel Ireland is looking for new employees in its European manufacturing HQ in Leixlip. Currently, there are openings for a Corporate Sales Technician and a Graduate Software Engineer. Among the many benefits of working with the global tech giant is an on-site dental and healthcare clinic, a games area, and free snacks & hot drinks.
