PIC: Debate over restricted dogs breaks out after Meath county councillor’s provocative Facebook post

Carl Kinsella

Alan Tobin, county councillor for Meath, has provoked fierce argument on his Facebook page after he posted a message expressing his approval for new signs that make clear the rules for keeping certain breeds of dog.

The sign carries the image of 10 different breeds of dog, including Rottweilers and German Shepherds – as well as instructions that such dogs should be leashed or muzzled, accompanied by an owner of over 16 years and bear a collar with the owner’s name and address.

Some commenters took issue with Tobin’s choice of language. The Ashbourne native wrote: “It still amazes me that some people think these dogs are ideal family pets.”

Tobin’s status can be read in-full below, alongside the dissenting comments – one of which reads:“What an un-educated statement to make…mind you I’m not surprised considering Fine Gael are completely ignorant when it comes to animal welfare in Ireland.

Good luck to you because you just made a HUGE mistake posting such a stupid comment.”
