George R.R. Martin, a classy guy…

It’s not every day that Game of Thrones creator George R.R Martin receives a heart-warming request from a 13-year old fan asking to meet a ‘gruesome grizzly death’ in his new books.

The young fan named Jack was honest enough to say that he’s not allowed to watch some parts of the show (which is probably a good thing having seen the way the Viper, the Hound and almost everyone at the Red Wedding met their maker) but that he also plans on becoming a wolf conversationalist when he is older.

Wolves feature quite prominently in Westeros with all five Stark children each possessing their own Direwolf.

Included in Jack’s letter was a donation of all his pocket money (£153) to Martin’s wolf sanctuary because he loves the animals so much.

The author was apparently so moved by the letter and donation that he replied him a very kind personal response and gesture, despite the fact he wasn’t able to give the young fan a spot in the book to and a “gruesome, grizzly death”.

Have a read of Jack’s letter.

This is what the Game of Thrones writer replied with:

“Dear Jack,

Thank you so much for your heartfelt, touching note.

I’ve heard that you donated all your £153 pocket money savings to my Prizeo fundraiser on behalf of the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary. I cannot tell you how much that moved me.

It pleases me no end to know that my novels, and the TV series based on them, have inspired readers as young as yourself to rally to the support of these majestic and too often stigmatized animals.

Alas, I cannot promise you a grisly death in THE WIND OF WINTER. Those spots have already been filled by some very generous donors, and there’s a limit to how many people even I can kill.

However, inspired by your example, my friends at Prizeo and I would love to follow your lead with a $10,000 in your name to the UK Wolf Conservation Trust. That’s a wonderful organization that I’ve heard much about, and they are lucky to count people like you as supporters.

I wish you the best of luck in your future career as a wolf conservationist, and hope that you inspire many others to follow your lead.

Yours,
GRRM”

So far, Martin has raised over $450,000 of his $500,000 goal but what is even more impressive is the news that the author actually does have a limit to the amount of characters that he can kill off.

It’s a miracle.
