Pic: Irish lad forgets to turn off mobile data in Las Vegas, lands home to absolutely massive phone bill

Let’s hope we won enough over there to cover it.

No matter how many warnings are given out, there will still be people who forget to turn off their mobile data when travelling abroad and then learn their lesson in the harshest way possible when arriving home to an exorbitant phone bill.

Although Jose Aldo has pulled out of a fight with Conor McGregor at UFC 179 later this month, there will still be plenty of Irish fans going to see him take on Chad Mendes at the MGM Grand on July 11.

With that in mind, JOE reader Matt Corrigan felt the need to get in touch to tell a cautionary tale of his own experience in Vegas and why he’ll never forget to turn off his mobile data again.

Matt, who is originally from Firhouse in Dublin but was living in London at the time, visited Las Vegas not so long ago for a mate’s wedding.

While there, he forgot to turn off his mobile data and, as a tunnel engineer, he was in constant contact with his work colleagues via e-mail and with his mates via WhatsApp messages. All the while, his mobile data bill was getting bigger and bigger.

Matt said that his week in Vegas was one of the best weeks of his life, but if the comedown wasn’t bad enough when he got back to London, can you imagine how he felt when he opened his phone bill on his return…

phonebill

Of a total bill of just over £1600, only £70 went on calls and £14 on text messages, leaving a whopping £1520 left over for mobile data, despite the fact that Matt had been using the MGM Grand wi-fi, which, he says, kept dropping off.

Matt, who currently lives in Doha, has since been in Vegas and remembered to turn off his mobile data on his last visit, but his experience serves as a cautionary reminder to anyone heading to Sin City this summer, whether for the McGregor fight or just on their holiers.

Cheers for the heads up Matt; bad enough arriving home without your dignity, this would only make it ten times worse.
