Irish people have an uncanny ability to get spotted at major worldwide events these days. A US Masters tournament barely passes without the sight of an inter-county GAA jersey, the words ‘Mayo for Sam’ have appeared publicly from everywhere from Alaska to Australia and, seemingly more than most countries, we have no problem approaching celebrities for photo opportunities whenever they arise.
Timothy Hegarty from Ardmore in County Down didn’t need to approach Paris Hilton for a photo at the Coachella festival recently, rather he just spotted an opportunity to be included in the background of the shot when Paris was being snapped alongside her brother Barron in a photo she subsequently posted on her Instagram page, a photo which attracted over 48,000 likes.

Amongst the many comments underneath the photo – some adoring ones from obsessed fans, other truly terrible ones from trolls – are two from Timothy’s nieces pointing out their uncle’s famous cameo and while he mightn’t become as famous/infamous as other people who have appeared alongside Paris in material that has surfaced on the Internet, this will surely be one for the mantelpiece all the same.
