PIC: Wonderful shot of the once-in-a-generation strawberry moon over Armagh on Monday night

Carl Kinsella

You don’t see this too often. Literally.

You’ve heard the expression ‘once in a blue moon’ but you might not have ever heard of a ‘strawberry moon’.

A strawberry moon is the name given to a full moon during the summer solstice, and there hadn’t been one since June 1967… until last night.

It’s called a strawberry moon because the Algonquin tribe of indigenous Americans called the June full moon by that name because it occurred around the time the strawberries were being picked, according to CNBC.com

Luckily, photographer Michael Mcelhone was on hand to photography the once-in-a-generation astronomical phenomenon. Almost miraculously, the strawberry moon even had a red tint. Take a good look, because we won’t see another until 2062.
