PICS: A room is going in this £8 million penthouse apartment in London for £1 a week

Conor Heneghan

If there’s a catch, we haven’t seen one.

People living in Dublin often complain about the cost of renting in the capital and by all accounts, it’s much worse across the pond in London.

Or at least it is in the majority of cases, but certainly not for the lucky sod who eventually moves into a double room in a penthouse apartment worth £8 million for the paltry sum of just £1 per week.

The room is currently being advertised on flat and house share website, SpareRoom, where the current occupants of the apartment – who have built and sold two successful technology companies and are currently working on a third – say they just want “someone to hang out with, party with, bounce ideas around with and generally enjoy all that London has to offer”.

For £1 a week, their new housemate will have a team of household staff to look after their every need – cleaning and laundry will be taken care of, a chef will prepare all of their meals and drivers will take them out to party.

The occupants don’t specify the type of person they want to move in with them, although they do mention that being ambitious, entrepreneurial and into technology is a big plus, while enjoying getting drunk quite often is essential.

Almost too good to be true, right?

Commenting on the ad, SpareRoom director Matt Hutchinson told MailOnline that he had no reason to believe that it isn’t genuine.

“We’ve seen some quirky ads in the 12 years we’ve been running SpareRoom but this definitely one of the most unusual,” Hutchinson said.

“We know plenty of people share for the social benefits, not just the money, but most can’t afford to waive the rent completely. The ad has already sparked a lot of interest so Andrew’s likely to have a very full inbox right now.”

If you’re in London and are interested – hell, this is nearly worth moving over for – you can check out the ad in full here, but at the very least we’d expect an invite for tea if you do end up moving in.
