POLL: Have you ever stolen from a self-service checkout?

Rosanna Cooney

There’s an unexpected item in the bagging area…

Those automated words strike frustration in us all as we realise we’ve scanned fruit wrong, or put our wallet on the scales for a nano second, only to be berated by the voice in the machine.

Self-serve checkouts are both the the bane and the blessing of our modern supermarket lives.

No, you don’t have to chat to anyone when you’re feeling grumpy, yes you can get through the process quicker if your fingers are nimble and yes, the opportunity is there to scan your avocados as onions and your pain au chocolat as a regular croissant, but do you dare?

A study by the University of Leicester showed supermarkets in the UK increased their lost revenue by 122% after they installed self-service checkouts.

We want to know; have you ever stolen by stealth or just been honestly confused as to whether that’s a chicken in your hand or a kilo of potatoes?

Be honest, now.
