Here are the most popular ways people get dumped

Rory Cashin

Break ups are hard, yo.

While sometimes they can be the best and most cathartic thing that can happen, more often than not they are quite literally some of the most emotionally devastating moments that occur in your lifetime.

A big part of the pain can come with how it happens, and we’re happy to report that most people are still mature and good folk and will break your heart right to your face.

The folks at YouGov did a massive poll on the subject, and the numbers broke down as follows:

  • Break-up face to face – 57%
  • Break-up via call – 14%
  • Break-up via text – 8%
  • Break-up via letter – 3%
  • Break-up via e-mail – 1%
  • Break-up via third party – 1%
  • Break-up via “ghosting” – 8%

First of all, more people break up via hand written letter than by e-mail? What year is this? Did Jane Austen or William Shakespeare just dump us? Although the idea of opening a tear-stained parchment detailing our love which can never be would almost cement over the cracks over our broken heart.

Secondly, the idea of getting someone else to dump your partner is… there are no words.

Thirdly, “ghosting” is getting more and more prominent, just ignoring them until they get the idea that you’re no longer interested.

And finally, the maths savvy of you will have figured out there’s still 8% unaccounted for above. They more or less answered “None of the above” or “Don’t know”, which really has our minds racing. Did they dump via Twitter? Facebook? Snapchat or Instagram? There was the couple who broke up via a Spotifty playlist, so really anything is possible at this point.
