Did you know now all plastics can go into your recycling bin?

Considering the ongoing climate crisis, lots of us have been trying to do our bit to be more environmentally-friendly. Given the huge volumes of waste humans are responsible for, and as we gradually transfer to a Circular Economy, we’re all well aware that recycling is one of the most effective ways we can do our part.

Thanks to advancements in packaging design and investment in recycling technology which allow segregation of different material types in recycling facilities in the Republic of Ireland, now ALL PLASTICS can go into the recycling bin.

We know! ALL of them.

Mind. Blown.

That means items like bread wrappers and pasta or salad bags can now go in the recycling bin provided the items are clean, dry and loose.

Here’s a handy list of the soft plastics that can now go in the recycling bin…

  • Bread wrappers
  • Salad bags
  • The outer wrapper for toilet or kitchen roll
  • Breakfast cereal bags
  • Plastic shopping bags
  • Frozen food bags
  • Pasta, rice and noodle bags
  • The bags/wrappers cheese comes in
  • Cracker wrappers

As information on how to recycle is now widely available and accessible, it makes it easier for everyone to learn how to recycle more and better.

Repak are on a mission to get the message out there that in the Republic of Ireland, ALL plastics can now go in the recycling bin.

Between the start of 2019 and the end of 2020, recycled plastic packaging tonnes increased by 9%, showing us that it’s really important to keep up the good work, especially now that we can put all of those plastics in the recycling bin, clean, dry and loose.

One of Repak’s core targets is for Ireland’s plastic recycling stats to reach 50% by 2025 and 55% by 2030, so we’ve a long way to go when it comes to recycling properly.

So, what can we do to help?

Firstly, one of the best steps we can take is putting ALL plastics into the recycling bin, making sure items are clean, dry and placed loosely.
