Reeling in 2015 – JOE’s 10 biggest stories in July

Remember these?

Remember these?

So much has happened in Irish society during 2015 that it’s easy to forget some of the biggest events and stories from the past 12 months.

Marriage equality, qualifying for the Euros, dancing Westmeath dad and Teresa Mannion were just some of the memorable moments but we’ve decided to take a look back at the year that was 2015.

Here’s what you were all reading, watching and listening to on JOE.ie in July.

10) McGregor beats Chad Mendes

Everyone breaks. He broke. Left hook. Lights out.

9) Johnny Glynn gives the best GAA post-match interview of the season

Take yourself back to late July.

Galway have just beaten Cork by 2-28 to 0-22 to reach the All-Ireland Hurling semi final.

One of the key men for the Tribesmen was Jonathan Glynn who scored a wonder goal in the first minute.

Glynn was asked about the perceived lack of firepower in the Galway squad. This was his brilliant answer.

Jonathan Glynn says “f**kin’ Bullshit” live on RTE after Galway’s win over Cork. Hilarious.

8) Ed Sheeran, Glen Hansard and Kodaline’s stunning version of Molly Malone

Did you get a ticket? If you didn’t then this was the next best thing.

7) This Galway Garda was a massive hit with the ladies

There’s something about a man in uniform. Fair play to him but this is one of those ‘only in Ireland’ moments.

6) ‘Go home Irish’ posters cause controversy in Canada

Posters that read ‘Go Home Irish’ in Toronto were the cause of consternation amongst Irish people living in the city, even though they were only put there as a joke.

In what turned out to be an ill-advised move, Dublin marketing agency The Social House arranged for posters reading ‘Go Home Irish’ to be placed in various parts of Toronto.

They were put there in an effort to create a bit of mischief and to raise awareness of their campaign to get Irish workers with international experience to return home.

According to a press release by The Social House, not everyone got the joke and it was the cause of complaints to the agency’s website and the cause of arguments amongst Canadian and Irish workers in one particular ad agency.

5) Reckless driver overtake a truck, meets a Garda car

Of all the cars you could almost collide with, due to your own stupidity, the last thing you’d want is an unmarked Garda car.

It happened to this driver in Ballsbridge, Dublin though.

4) Irish crowd control at it’s very best

The crowd at Ed Sheeran didn’t need to be told to ‘leave in an organised and calm manner’ because it looked just as much craic leaving the gig as it was during it.

3) The Facebook competition ran by the Galway car dealership

An honest mixup or a shady competition that would put Del Boy, Charlie Haughey and Harry Redknapp to shame? Take a look and see for yourself.

2) Sinead O’Connor’s rousing introduction for Conor McGregor

Goosebumps.

1) The Irish dancers that became internet superstars

Take a bow Kieran Hardiman, Alan Kenefick and Ciaran Plummer because you came absolute sensations.
