Reeling in 2015 – JOE’s 10 biggest viral stories for August

Remember these?

Remember these?

So much has happened in Irish society during 2015 that it’s easy to forget some of the biggest events and stories from the past 12 months.

The Berkeley tragedy, marriage equality, sporting highs and lows, viral sensations and Teresa Mannion were just some of the memorable moments but we’ve decided to take a look back at the year that was 2015.

Here’s what you were all reading, watching and listening to on JOE.ie in August.

10) The best 5 schools in the country

School may be out for Christmas but I’d wager that the students at the following were all able to write perfectly articulate lists to Santa. Here’s the percentage of the secondary-school graduates from these schools that move into third-level education.

1. Laurel Hill Colaiste FCJ, Sth Circular Rd, Limerick 92.4%

2. Presentation Brothers College, Mardyke, Cork 87.8%

3. Scoil Mhuire, Sidney Place, Cork 85.3%

4. Colaiste Iosagain, Booterstown, Co Dublin 85.2%

5. Gonzaga College, Ranelagh, Dublin 6 85.0%

9) The best ever answer on Winning Streak

To be fair, if you won lots of money, you would 100% spend it on the exact same thing. What a man Peadar is.

8) The best looking GAA player

2015 wasn’t a vintage one for the Dublin hurlers after they were crushed by Galway in the Leinster Championship before Waterford delivered the fatal blow in the quarter-final.

Ballyboden’s Shane Durkin has cause for celebration though after he was named the most really, really, ridiculously good looking GAA player in Ireland.

Check out the list in full.

7) The Irish tourist in Turkey that made the news around the world

According to a report by Turkish news outlet NTV, Irish citizen Mohammed Fadel Dobbous and his friends were supposedly drunk and entered the shop on the street to buy alcohol, but the shopkeeper told them that he was not selling alcohol and they started to argue.

The shopkeeper asked him to leave his shop, but Mohammed Fadel Dobbous got angry and called two of his friend from the hotel. The man in question then opened the fridge, dropped all the bottles to the ground and the fight began.

The world was absolutely fascinated by this footage and it’s easy to see why.

6) Rachel Wyse is an absolute champ

A bunch of cheeky lads form Galway decided to chance their arm and see if Sky Sports presenter Rachel Wyse would fancy giving them a call.

She went one better.

5) The kinky photo that was unintentionally uploaded to Facebook

Always be aware of your surroundings when taking a selfie.

4) Diarmuid Connolly vs Lee Keegan

No one could argue about the result in the replay but there was just one incident people were talking about from their first meeting.

Take another look.

3) Rob Kearney channels his inner McGregor in this fantastic prank

Irish rugby internationals Rob Kearney, Peter O’Mahony, Robbie Henshaw and RTE’s Aidan Power got some quality ‘play time’ in by ripping the absolute piss out of a couple of unsuspecting car salesmen during a test drive.

It’s absolutely wonderful and you can see it here.

2) A very Irish story unfolded on this flight

Priceless, absolutely priceless.

1) An Irish hotel was named as the best in the world

Fancy a little break over the Christmas season? Ashford Castle in Co. Mayo was named as Hotel of the Year at the Virtuoso Best of the Best Awards in Las Vegas and it’s not hard to see why.

Ashford Castle managed to fight off competition from over 1,000 hotels worldwide to claim the award, which comes shortly after it was voted as the third best hotel in the world by US magazine Travel + Leisure.

Congratulations to them.
