Reeling in 2015 – JOE’s 10 biggest stories in June

Remember these?

Remember these?

So much has happened in Irish society during 2015 that it’s easy to forget some of the biggest events and stories from the past 12 months.

The Berkeley tragedy, marriage equality, sporting highs and lows, viral sensations and Teresa Mannion were just some of the memorable moments but we’ve decided to take a look back at the year that was 2015.

Here’s what you were all reading, watching and listening to on JOE.ie in June.

10) Greatest ever keep off my land sign spotted in Kerry

Would you still chance it?

9) Clodagh Cogley’s incredibly life affirming piece after Berkeley

A must read.

8) Mayo man meets a girl in Coppers, this is his follow up text.

In a word, smooth.

7) The Calvita girl is on Tinder

Did anyone match with her and use any cheesy lines?

6) US TV station was obsessed with the Irish fans at a baseball game

A game that can usually be as dull as dishwater was made more interesting by a bunch of Irish students who made their own fun during the Padres game with Arizona Diamondbacks in San Diego.

Take a look.

5) One simple tip to save your iPhone battery

The experts/geeks have said that ‘swiping up’ in an effort to close apps doesn’t actually save your battery because the act of opening them up again ultimately drains more energy.

Instead, the best practice is to go into settings, general and tap on background app refresh to see the list of apps that are running in the background and draining your battery.

You can then switch the setting off entirely to save power, or switch off individual apps.

4) The Westmeath dad celebrating their semi-final win against Meath

Rumour has it that this hop, skip and jig was copied all over the country since. Wonderful stuff.

3) The New York Times’ editorial stance on Berkeley

The paper issued an apology of sorts for this editorial but it didn’t hide the fact that the original piece was woefully misguided and lacking compassion.

To summarise, they used the Berkeley incident to bring up old negative J1-related stories. Here is an extract from the article.

“They come by the thousands — Irish students on work visas, many flocking to the West Coast to work in summer jobs by day and to enjoy the often raucous life in a college town at night.

“It was, for many, a rite of passage, one last summer to enjoy travel abroad before beginning a career.”

The next paragraph is the one that struck a nerve, it was so badly judged considering the sensitivity of the topic.

“…the work-visa program that allowed for the exchanges has in recent years become not just a source of aspiration, but also a source of embarrassment for Ireland, marked by a series of high-profile episodes involving drunken partying and the wrecking of apartments in places like San Francisco and Santa Barbara.”

 2) The store in Galway that refused to sell The Star in the aftermath of the Berkeley tragedy

The front page of The Irish Daily Star was heavily criticised this morning for the images they used when reporting the Berkeley tragedy.

They ran with photos of the victims superimposed on an image of body bags being taken from the scene of incident in California.

O’Brien’s Newsagents in Galway took exception to the front page and removed it from their shelves.
