Shane Lowry given a hero's welcome in his hometown of Clara, Co. Offaly
The man is an Irish hero.
Shane Lowry, fresh from his first major victory at The Open in Portrush, has been treated to a well-deserved hero's welcome in his hometown of Clara in County Offaly.
The stage was set for Lowry to make his official return to Offaly with the Claret Jug he made his own after a commanding performance at the weekend.
Thousands were in attendance to cheer him on, and guests included Irish sports broadcasting hero Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, who jokingly encouraged Lowry to return to GAA. Mundy was also on hand to provide tunes for the revellers basking in the sunlight and waiting for the prodigal son to appear.
Also there was Lowry's incredible grandmother Emily Scanlon, who has become an icon in her own right thanks to a wonderful interview she gave to RTÉ.
Photos from Clara this evening do an excellent job of capturing what Lowry's success means to the town. Check them out below.
