Red Bull Flugtag is coming.

Are you ready for one of the biggest events of the Irish summer. After a six-year absence, Red Bull Flugtag is returning to these shores. It will take place in Dun Laoghaire on Sunday, 20 May, and there’s still time to enter!

If you’re planning to enter the Red Bull Flugtag, we’ve included some top tips to help you go the distance and emerge victorious on the day. We’re calling it a foolproof guide to winning.*

Buckle in, get comfortable and prepare to absorb some GIF-based knowledge that will tell you exactly what you need to know.

Think aerodynamics

There are no hard and fast rules to winning Red Bull Flugtag. Still, building something that has all the aerodynamics of a heavy stone is unlikely to end well.

It’s not all about aesthetics

Just because something looks like a plane, that doesn’t mean it’s going to fly. It’s great to have a visually impressive contraption but you should also consider how it’s going to work.

Wings could be useful

There’s no rule that says you need a wing but the record-breaking 78.5metre flight by the Chicken Whisperers suggests that a having a winged flying contraption may just be a good idea.

Style and performance matters

You get points based on distance, creativity of craft and showmanship so it’s not just about flying as far as possible. Aside from making a working flying machine that looks great, you also have to put some effort into the performance. Red Bull Flugtag is no place for shrinking violets.

Nail the take-off

It seems obvious but this is where your ground crew come in. There’s not much the pilot can do if his four ground crew members make a balls of the launch.

Check out the competition before it’s your turn

Obviously, this won’t work if you’re going first! Otherwise, check out the opposition efforts to see what does and doesn’t work. You can learn a lot from your opponents’ mistakes.

So now that you know everything you need to win, what are you waiting for?

And there’s still time to sign up to represent JOE at this year’s event. Click here to find out how you and four of your friends could fly the flag for us in Dun Laoghaire.

*Disclaimer: It probably isn’t a foolproof guide to winning.
