The Irish Cancer Society are looking for you to get your local GAA club involved in the fight against cancer and today we’re bringing you five simple tips for reducing the risk of getting the big ‘C’.

Being healthy and staying active are the keys behind reducing the risk of cancer, so if you’re currently playing for your local GAA club then you’re already doing yourself a world of good.

Sadly, there are still people out there who don’t quite know how a few simple tips could help to save lives, so here are five nice and easy tips that you can tell the rest of the lads down the club, as well as your friends and family.

  • Give up the smokes! Smoking is linked to 30% of all cancers. But we all know (some will know first hand) that it’s really tough to quit. Help is at hand through the Irish Cancer Society Quitline. Call them on callsave 1850 201 203
  • Eat a healthy diet! By eating a balanced diet and maintaining a healthy body weight you can have a seriously good impact on your health.
  • Cut back on the booze! You can reduce your risk of cancer by cutting back on the alcohol you drink.
  • Get moving! Just 30 minutes of exercise a day can make a real difference to your health.
  • Mind your skin! Non-melanoma skin cancer is the number one cancer in Ireland. Make sure to use sun screen at all times and stay out of the sun at peak times between 12 – 3pm. Take this into account when you’re out on the pitch on a Sunday afternoon!

The funds your club raises for the Irish Cancer Society will help to ensure that everyone affected by cancer in Ireland gets the care, support and information they need. Over the next few weeks will be showing you exactly how you can get started on raising the much needed funds that will help fight the battle against cancer.

Your raised funds will help the Irish Cancer Society to continue to invest in cutting edge research to find new cancer treatments; and it will support their work to inform people about the choices they can make in their lives that will help them to reduce their risk of cancer.

So go on, spread the word among your club and check back next week when we show you how to get started on raising money.
