Remember that film that Michael Fassbender starred in about the trials and tribulations of sex addiction? Yeah, well apparently Steve McQueen, the director of Shame, has refused to allow the movie to be shown in Singapore.
It’s nothing personal Singapore, but he just wants you to stop censoring all the riding so people can experience his art fully. Eh…okay…
The Irish Independent reports that Steve McQueen has denied Singapore the right to show Shame after censors ordered that a threesome between the Fassbender and two women be shortened or cut entirely.
Apparently, censors were shocked by the graphic content of the film and rated it suitable only for viewers who are aged 21 and above.
In fairness, it is a film about sex addiction, so we’re not entirely sure what the censors were expecting…
Anyway needless to say, Mr McQueen doesn’t take too kindly to having his films cut just because they feature a bit of boob and arse.
“Mr McQueen feels that it is important for his work to be seen in the way it was intended and hence was…not agreeable to have his film be cut in anyway. We respect his decision and as such this film will not be able to be released in Singapore theatrically,” said a spokeswoman for distributor Cathay-Keris Films.
In retaliation, censors of the Censors of the Media Development Authority have said: “We are of the view that the prolonged and explicit threesome sex sequence has exceeded our classification guidelines.”
When it comes to censorship, Singapore has some serious guidelines in place – even Playboy is not allowed in the country. Harsh.
Either way, unless the censors give in and allow the crazy threesome scene, it seems that the poor residents of Singapore will remain deprived of the Fassbender showing the, ahem, horrors of sex addiction.
