Six outdoor pursuits in Ireland that you have to try this summer

Some brilliant outdoor activities are right on your doorstep.

As Irish people, there are very few things we enjoy as much as packing our bags and flying as far away as possible. But sometimes, there really is no need.

We have a whole host of enjoyable outdoor activities that don’t require us leaving the country. And with the weather the way it has been lately, why would you bother leaving?

With Rockshore offering you the chance to win a holiday for you and 11 friends on a private island off the west coast, it seemed like a perfect time to discuss some of the best Irish outdoor pursuits.

Here’s a list of six of the best outdoor pursuits in Ireland that you have to try this summer.

White water rafting

You can take your choice of either Dublin, Donegal or Meath with this one; you and your mates can hop into an inflatable raft and you simply attack the water.

How well you do is dependent on you and your team, and your ability to manipulate the conditions as a group. This is the perfect activity for a close group friends, or for a team-bonding exercise.

Make sure you bring a spare pair of clothes, and don’t ever try this without a professional! Otherwise, you’ll learn all to well the phrase “up the creek without a paddle.”

Footee

Are you the sort of person who used to be a top footballer back in the day, but have lost a yard of pace or two over the years? Well then this is the activity for you.

You may have lost the fitness you once had, but you reckon that still have that wand of a right foot, which will be tested to its limits on a football golf course which will measure how powerful and accurate you are with the ball at your feet.

There’s one in Bohernabreena in Dublin – where you’ll also get to see some absolutely gorgeous views – and there are loads of other options all over the country.

Probably best not to get your hopes up for a hole-in-one though.

A dip in the 40 foot

Heading for a good ol’ fashioned swim is underrated.

The 40 foot in Dun Laoghaire is not only a beautiful place, but it’s one of Dublin’s most iconic swimming spots. We’d advise caution when visiting there however, and you should only go if you’re an experienced swimmer. There are quieter beaches around the corner if you want something a bit more relaxed.

We should probably remind you that the water can be absolutely freezing, so you may want to save this one for a warm summer’s day. We’re working under the assumption that the good weather we’ve had summer of 2018 will never end, so that shouldn’t be too hard.

Curracoloe beach

If the weather is as beautiful as it has been lately, there can’t be many places you’d rather be in Ireland than Curracloe beach.

It’s absolutely gorgeous, and there are so many activities you can do with your mates while you’re there. Whether it’s camping, a walk along the beach or just relaxing in the sand, Curracloe is the place to go.

If it’s good enough for Saving Private Ryan, it’s good enough for us…

Mountain biking in Ticknock

Located around 10km from Dublin City, this is the ideal location for someone who fancies themselves as a bit of an adventurer.

We have previously written about the experience in detail, but in short: mountain biking is brilliant. If you haven’t done anything of the sort before, luckily there are excellent facilities available ranging from on-site parking to bike rental and guides with experienced riders.

Not only is it thrilling, but the views that you’ll get to see are absolutely class… On the right day, you can even see Wales from the mountaintop.

It’s a decent workout too, so you can keep fine-tuning that summer body.

Climbing Carrauntoohil

This one is for the fitter folk among us, so prepare to release your inner adventurer and make your way to the highest point on Irish soil.

This one will test your physical strength, determination and willpower as you push yourself to the limit. Sun cream might not always be first into your travel bag, but seeing how long you’ll be exposed you should always pack it along with a good jacket and hiking shoes.

It will still be fun though…

Just imagine the feeling when you make the top. That’d be your summer made.
