Well worth a visit.

Sligo

And why wouldn’t it?

It’s that time of year when holidays are very much on the mind, but you don’t necessarily need to get out of the country to make the most of your time off.

Holidaying at home can be just as rewarding and enjoyable an experience as travelling abroad and it’s not just people in Ireland who are singing the praises of what the country has to offer.

Vogue, the iconic fashion magazine, has given a glowing endorsement to Sligo in the UK edition of its magazine, with the north-western town earning a recommendation as a must-see location alongside exotic European destinations such as the Amalfi coast in Italy, Marbella in Spain, Puglia in Italy and the Cote d’Azur in France.

Vogue Daily Editor Scarlett Conlon selected Sligo as her destination of choice in a piece titled ‘Where The Vogue Editors Are Holidaying This Summer’, describing it as “wonderful for families” but “just as ideal for a romantic weekend away any time of year”.

Sligo’s “infinite beaches and lakes ready for picnicking, paddling and fishing” merit a mention, with Conlon also recommending “taking a long, rambling walk around Hazelwood Forest” and experiencing live music in one of the many establishments in Sligo town, such as Hargadon Bros. on O’Connell Street.

Fáilte Ireland themselves recommend giving surfing a go in Strandhill – and enjoying a delightful ice cream from Mammy Johnston’s café afterwards – as well as taking in landscape highlights such as Ben Bulben, the Lake Isle of Innisfree and Glencar Waterfall.

Sligo, of course, is only one of many great places to stop off at along the Wild Atlantic Way and you can find more ideas and inspiration on how to embrace the celebrated route here.
