Ireland might not have had the privilege of hosting a major worldwide event like the World Cup or the Olympics just yet, but all that is about to change with the staging of the inaugural World Chip Championship in Limerick on the June Bank Holiday weekend.

The event is being staged on Saturday 31 May as part of the Culture and Chips festival in the Treaty City, which, of course, is the National City of Culture for 2014, and will take place in the Culture & Chips Spiegeltent on what is a long-overdue national celebration of the chip over four days.

Chip chefs from all over are invited to take part in what is an open contest, where participants will no doubt be deep frying very hard to batter the opposition and spud them out of their misery in their attempts to take-away the trophy.

Of course, the more mischievous competitors will be looking to curry favour with the organisers and cheat their way to victory, one of many aro-matters the chip chiefs will have to deal with in what will certainly be a sizzling contest.

For more information on the event and the festival in general you can ketchup with all the info on the event website here.
