JOE takes a look at a few players who have as much style off the pitch as they do on it
There are plenty of poorly dressed footballers, and even more incredibly badly dressed footballers, but among the ranks of the best in the game, there are also a few who know exactly what the
David Beckham
Let’s get the obvious one out of the way first: no list of stylish footballers would be complete without Sir David of Beckhamingshireton. If we leave out that time he had the corn rows or the time he wore that sarong (unforgettable, for all the wrong reasons) then Becks very rarely sets a foot wrong. Although he was happy to experiment and flip flop around with the trends in the early days, recently he’s gone for classic cuts and sleek lines that really are timeless. Of course, it helps that he’s really, really ridiculously good looking too, of course.
Xabi Alonso
JOE loves Xabi for so many, many reasons, and we were as upset as anyone (except perhaps Xabi himself) when he got that yellow card that ruled him out of the Champions League final. Still, if nothing else, then we’ll get a chance to see him turning on the style in a quality suit in the stands for the final, and we can guarantee that you won’t see him pulling a John Terry and slapping on the kit for a cheeky photo at the end. Like Becks, he sticks to classic and simple looks that won’t be out of style any time soon, like a ginger, footballing Don Draper. Even when he takes risks with bold patterns, he still pulls it off with style.
Andrea Pirlo
Does an Italian midfield legend who also owns a vineyard and has a brilliant beard have style? Does the pope wear a big hat? Not all the time, so that was a bad example, but the answer to the original question is that yes, Pirlo has loads of style, in an effortless. Obviously, as an Italian he knows how to wear a suit, but even when slumming it and going casual, he oozes the type of class that one of his pinpoint passes does as it scythes open opposition defences.
