Style Icon: Gerard Butler

This week take a look at the style of manly Scotish actor Gerard Butler. When he's not wearing the hell out of suit, he's kicking it casual

JOE

Some guys are just born lucky; others have to work to their absolute limits to achieve their dreams and Gerard Butler is as pure an example of the latter as you’ll find. The Scottish actor has been around a long time, but only recently scaled the a-list after a couple of break-out roles.

Over the years his style has evolved as much as he has, but the Glaswegian actor, who’s about to turn 43, always maintained that gruff, overtly masculine look. Granted, having abs you could knock someone out with if swung hard enough at certainly helps.

Some actors let the clothes wear them; Gerard Butler fills suits snugly with carefully built, toned shoulders, and in turn creates an almost obtainable look. Not a conventionally handsome Hollywood actor, he’s nevertheless regarded as such a sought after sex symbol because of how he holds himself, and the clobber that sits on that sculpted torso.

Someone that takes care of themselves can pretty much make any outfit look good. If it’s simply jeans and a t-shirt, or a tailored suit – it doesn’t matter.  Butler has also favoured the stubble-ridden look because it suits the type of roles he goes for; overtly blokey, ready for action or rom-com rogue.

Then there are the awards ceremonies, when he’ll stand next to Ryan Seacrest wearing a similar tux yet the duo somehow look like entirely different sexes. Butler has always organically projected an image of a guy’s guy, a manly man, and it’s that relatable image that’s seen him scale the elusive Hollywood hierarchy to become an A-list star.

He’s just approaching his mid-40s so as long as the actor keeps taking care of himself then even the most ostensibly plain t-shirts will look pretty damn great. Good man, Gerry.
