To be in with a chance to win a load of exciting prizes thanks to our mates at 7Up Free, you just need to join in on Twitter using the hashtag #upliftmysummer or, from the 29th July, via Facebook or the website www.7up.ie, and let us know what’s going to uplift your summer, from barbecues to playing frisbee.

To celebrate the launch, 7Up Free and Amárach have looked into what makes the Irish summer different, delving into everything from conversation topics to Irish fashion blunders, and after the recent hot spell, it’s no wonder that the weather proves to be a hot topic of conversation.

More than half of people surveyed cited it as being one of their main summer conversation topics. Perhaps the recent good weather is also behind the fact that more people were talking about the GAA championships than holidays abroad, showing that when it comes to the real uplifting Irish Summer, memories of annual sporting events always stay front of mind.

A spell of good weather and major fashion faux pas often go hand in hand (especially amongst us Irish males) and when questioned on this topic there was a clear out and out winner. Over half of Irish people (54%) noted that socks and sandals are the worst fashion fail in Ireland, while other noted fashion mistakes included Irish lads wearing woolly hats with shorts and tank tops, and the ever-stylish bum bags, which reappeared for some reason during the sunny days.

Delving into what makes an Irish summer uplifting; people were asked what activities they enjoy the most during the summer months. It would appear that getting together with friends over the barbeque ranks high with almost a quarter of respondents choosing it as their favourite uplifting summer activity.

More men cited outdoor activities as their preferred summer activity with gardening and swimming coming out as favourites. Respondents were also asked to rate the elements that made a summer uniquely Irish, weather fixation rated highly with two thirds claiming that constant discussion about bad weather is what fuels Irish small talk over the Summer months. However 20% of those asked claimed the farmer’s tan as the thing that sets us aside from other nations.

When it comes to a nostalgic view on uplifting childhood summers, it appears that old favourite rounders hits a home run with over one third of people (35%) mentioning it as their favourite game, with Tip The Can and Frisbee also being referenced as summer time favourites.

From Wednesday, 7Up Free have been asking people to submit what will uplift their summer. They will be giving away lots of prizes throughout the summer for the best entries, so to be in with a chance to win, you can enter via Twitter using the hashtag #upliftmysummer or, from the 29th July, head on over to Facebook or check out the 7Up website for another way to enter.

Whether you fancy winning a weekly Friday ice cream to brighten your day or tickets to one of the hottest festivals in Europe, the 7Up Free team might just make it happen!
