Are you sick and tired of getting yourself filthy with dishwater? Well, here's how to install a dishwasher in ten easy steps.

JOE

Are you sick and tired of getting yourself filthy with dishwater? Well, here’s how to install a dishwasher in ten easy steps.

For most men out there, the closest we get to the sink is when we have to put a dirty dish in it. Rarely will a man happily do the washing up without the slightest complaint to be heard. So for you men out there who wouldn’t even dream of going near the sink, here’s how you install a dishwasher in just ten easy steps.

What you’ll need:

Drill + hole cutting tool
Screwdriver
Pliers
Spirit level
Length of drain pipe
New Dishwasher… obviously

Step 1: Get the lie of the land

Before you begin to unwrap and install your brand spanking new dishwasher, make sure it will actually fit and work in your kitchen. Make sure your dishwasher can reach the hot water supply and the electrical mains. Also make sure that it can reach the drainpipe under the sink.

Step 2: Test fit

Once you’re sure that all the relevant wires and hoses can reach their intended destination you should test fit the dishwasher. Make sure it fits nice and snugly in whatever space you made available. Once it fits nicely, take it back out.

Step 3: Drill a hole in the side

You’ll now have to drill a hole around 4-5cm wide in the side of your cabinet that holds the sink (make sure there isn’t one already there!). You’ll have to run the hose through this hole so if there are a few cabinets in between your dishwasher and the sink you’ll have to drill more than one.

Step 4: ‘You gotta get yourself connected’

Well, it’s time to get your dishwasher connected. Attach the drain pipe that should have come supplied with the dishwasher to the back as instructed on the manual – the manual is that book thing that you threw out about an hour ago. Also, connect the water supply line to the hot water input valve on the dishwasher. Everything should be held into place by clips.

Step 5: Don’t let sparks fly

Your dishwasher should have come with a plug, however, sometimes this plug isn’t directly connected to the dishwasher so you’ll have to do it yourself. Don’t worry though as your manual will give you instructions on how to connect them (black wire to black wire, white to white and green to yellow).

Step 6: Move into place

You can now begin to move the dishwasher into place, just remember to thread the wires through the hole in the cabinet that you just drilled.

Step 7: Connect the pipes

You can now connect the drain tube to the sink and the water supply tube to the water pipe under the sink. Simples.

Step 8: Level it out

For your dishwasher to work at 100 per cent you’ll need to make sure it’s level. If it’s not, gunk and grime could clog the system over time and you won’t want that now would you? Get out a sprit level and make sure the bubble is on the line.

Step 9: Give her a whirl

It’s finally time to test out your new dishwasher. Give it a dry run (or a wet run in this case) before you put any dishes into it.

Step 10: Final touches

Once you’re happy that the dishwasher is working fine and without any leaks, you can begin to put the finishing touches to it. If your dishwasher comes with mounting screws you can securely fasten it to the underside of you cabinet lip. Once you finish with this, you’re done.
