The fantastic story of a Kerry woman recovering her stolen rosary beads thanks to Storm Desmond

A great story

And that’s before we even mention the hunter who mistook the bag containing the rosary beads for a duck.

Ireland is still feeling the effects of Storm Desmond as flooding wreaks havoc throughout the country, but in an extremely roundabout way, it also provided some good news for a woman in Kerry recently.

According to the Irish Times, Eileen Finnegan from Kilgarvan in Kerry is crediting the storm for the return of a number of religious items that had been stolen from her car last month.

Ms Finnegan’s car – along with two others vehicles – was broken into while she was attending mass on November 14 and a number of items were stolen from it, including a bag containing a sum of money, rosary beads that belonged to her late mother and a Padre Pio medal.

Ms Finnegan then issued an appeal for the return of the rosary beads on local radio, saying that she didn’t mind if whoever was responsible for the theft of the bag kept the money that was contained within.

On Friday, a duck shooter from Millstreet in Cork found the bag – which had been discarded by the thieves – washed up and covered in seaweed in nearby Kenmare, having originally thought that the bag was a duck.

On reporting his discovery to his nephew who works in a local hotel, his nephew recalled Ms Finnegan’s appeal and she was reunited with the medal and the rosary beads (which require repair) that were still contained inside the bag.

Commenting on the discovery on local radio today, Ms Finnegan said: “Storm Desmond brought this to me. I must be the only person in Ireland happy with that storm.

“Obviously whoever broke into the car took what they wanted from the bag and threw it over the ditch and the flood came in and washed it away,” she added, saying that the remarkable series of events has convinced her that “there is definitely someone up there”.

If that story doesn’t bring a smile to your face on a miserable Monday, we don’t know what will.
