These 4 members of Irish Defence Forces to undertake a massive hike for Pieta House

Tony Cuddihy

Four members of the Irish defence forces will undertake a massive, 127km hike of the Wicklow Way, starting on Monday 28th December at midnight, inside 48 hours.

The trek is in aid of suicide prevention charity Pieta House, and you can donate here.

All four walkers are members of the Irish Defence Forces.

Ronan Guerin, (24) from Swords, Dublin is a member of the Artillery Regiment based in Athlone, joined by his fellow workmate Brian Gallogly (27) from Longford.

Jamie Martin (25) from Dundalk, a serving member in the Air Corps based in Baldonnel and Martin McDowell (29) from Swords, a member of the Reserve Defence Force in 2 Cav, Cathal Brugha, Dublin.

The group have set themselves a gruelling task within a very short time frame, not to mention the harshness or adversities of typical Irish Winter Weather thrown into the mix.

They are, however, training hard for their trek.

The walkers want to bring awareness of help that is available to those in dark places particularly at Christmas time for both those struggling and also those who have lost loved ones to suicide.

Their intention is to raise money for Pieta House – a valuable Irish asset, providing professional and free help to people in desperate circumstances.

Far too many people have experienced a personal loss of friends or family member and these boys are no different.

This is the route they’ll be walking…

Ronan’s personal experience with the loss of his uncle over Christmas 2013 has urged him to share this message of hope.

Ronan believes that a simple phone call could have saved his life. He would appeal to anyone that feels like they can’t bring themselves to speak with family or friends to reach out to their nearest Pieta House Crisis Centre, who have helped over 5,000 people last year alone.
