These are the most believable excuses for calling in sick to work according to bosses

Alan Loughnane

We’ve all done it (not me, I wouldn’t do that)…

There are days the thought of going to work can be just too much some people and they decide to pull a sickie from work.

But, after a few years of being creative, it can be difficult to think of an excuse that’s both believable enough to earn you a day off but not too serious that it will linger in people’s minds. You don’t want them asking you how you’re feeling two weeks later when you’ve forgotten about your fictitious ailment.

The good people over at AXA PPP conducted a handy little survey of over 1,000 business leaders where they concluded which is the most believable excuse for missing work.

Here are the ten most believable excuses according to the survey:

  1. Flu
  2. Back pain
  3. Injury by accident
  4. Stress
  5. Elective surgery
  6. Depression
  7. Anxiety
  8. Common cold
  9. Migraine
  10. None of the above

But even though a flu is cited as the most believable, it only satisfied four out of ten bosses with the majority remaining unconvinced of its truthfulness.

Eight per cent said that they were unconvinced about any of the above excuses.

Get working on that sick voice now…
