Dr. Mark Post cooked up the world’s first lab grown hamburger today in London, but it was not a cheap dish to make by any means.

While he could have popped down to his local fast food restaurant and picked one up for just a few euro, he decided that he’d rather shell out $325,000 (roughly €245,000) to produce this burger, with money given to him mostly by the co-founder of Google Sergey Brin.

It was so expensive because they managed to grow it in a lab from 20,000 protein strands grown from cow stem cells, according to what the lads at The Verge are saying, and two brave volunteers stepped up to taste the meat treat.

They stated that it did indeed taste more or less like meat, but obviously had less fat on it. Dr. Post stated that he did believe that this type of lab grown meat would enter the market, given the demands there are currently on meat production and how they are unsustainable, but that it would be 10-20 years before it was available, given the cost and the fact that it can still only be produced in low volumes.
