9 things that nobody tells you about proposing to your other half

Are you planning to pop the question?

Engagement season is upon us. It’s no surprise that summer is a popular time for proposals. It’s much harder to be romantic in the rain and cold of an Irish winter.

With lots of people going on holiday, romantic locations like Venice or Paris can provide a perfect backdrop for a proposal. And there’s always a certain charm to far-flung locations or more exotic backdrops – it makes for a good story at least.

If you’re planning to propose on holiday and looking for a last minute ring, Voltaire Diamonds have hundreds of rings in their showroom and you can even book a consultant for some one-to-one advice and help. For those of you thinking about taking the leap, we’ve come up with a list of things that nobody tells you about proposing to your partner.

things that nobody tells you about proposing

1. Guessing her ring size is harder than you think

A show of hands – who knows their partner’s ring size? Exactly. Well, fear not because help is at hand. If your other half has rings lying around, try to see how far down your little finger they go and use that as a rough guide when you go ring shopping.

2. You may need to ask her father for her hand

OK, this may sound like something out of the Dark Ages but don’t be too quick to dismiss old traditions. It’s really important for some people and not doing it can cast a long shadow over a proposal or marriage. It may be weird or awkward but it’s something you should consider if it’s a big deal to her.

3. A bespoke ring doesn’t have to break the bank

If your partner has her own taste and style, she might want to create her own bespoke ring. Don’t panic! It isn’t as expensive or as complicated as you would think. It could even work out cheaper as you can design the ring around a diamond that suits your budget.

A bespoke ring can be made in four to six weeks and there’s something particularly romantic about giving her a unique token of your love.

4. Getting a ring requires research

If you think that the “four Cs” is a piece of classical music, you might want to check out our guide to engagement rings. There’s a lot to consider when buying a ring, including style, colour, cut, clarity, carat – and the personal preference of your significant other, of course.

If you haven’t a clue what to get, it’s probably safer to propose with a token ring. It’s perfectly legit. That way, you’ll avoid any disappointment and your other half will get a second big day when you go ring shopping together.

5. You’ll be more nervous than you think

It doesn’t matter how confident you normally are. Once you take a knee, it’s easy to have an out of body experience and find yourself mumbling “Bull Do Garry Lee” like a shy schoolboy.

6. It’s worth it to catch the moment on camera

Try to organise a photographer or even a mate to capture the moment. It’s nice to have a memento of that moment, plus the kids and grandkids will love it!

7. This is kind of a big deal

The story of how you proposed will come up again and again for the rest of your life. Do you want to be the person who interrupted Coronation Street to suggest getting married? All we’re saying is it’s probably worth making an effort… Or getting off the couch at the very least.

8. Wedding questions are coming

You’ve only just popped the question but don’t expect any time to soak up your new relationship status. Almost as soon as that ring touches your partner’s finger, people will be asking about wedding dates and venues.

9. Saying “my fiancée” or “my fiancé” is just weird

You never really get used to saying fiancée or fiancé. That fact alone is probably a good reason to go for a short engagement. At least husband or wife sounds a little bit less pretentious!
