He’s got some very interesting company on the shortlist, too.
You’ll probably recall a week or so back, Trump sent out this tweet:
Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named “Man (Person) of the Year,” like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 24, 2017
The reaction online was immense, with both TIME Magazine itself tweeting “The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year. TIME does not comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6”, and then TIME’s Managing Editor Richard Stengel saying, “Hate to tell you but that PROBABLY means you’re NOT Person of the Year. They just wanted a photo shoot. But I’m sure you still have that fake TIME cover somewhere in storage.”
However, on Monday morning, the shortlist for the award (or is that “award”?) was announced on NBC’s Today Show, and Trump is actually on there! Turns out that now infamous tweet might not have been an out-and-out lie, after all. Just… a bit of a misunderstanding?
The shortlist for TIME’s Person Of The Year is as follows:
- United States of America’s President Donald Trump
- Special Counsel Robert Mueller
- Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos,
- The #MeToo movement
- North Korean leader Kim Jung Un
- Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers
- China’s President Xi Jinping
- 800,000 undocumented immigrants who arrived in the United States as young children, collectively known as The Dreamers
- Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
- Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins
If Trump actually wins, we’ll never hear the end of it.
