Masturbation. Drunk-driving. Gay marriage.
Taken in isolation, these are all valid, common topics of conversation that we should all be able to discuss civilly. Stick them all into one conversation taking place on Joe Duffy’s Liveline and somehow, you end up with a circus.
The conversation began as a discussion with the editor of Catholic magazine Alive! about an article they had published that claimed children who suffered corporal punishment in their youth go on to be more successful. Then, in an ironic turn of events given the guest, all hell broke loose.
A female caller phoned in to let the listeners know about her complete displeasure with Ireland’s current direction – listing society’s many “ills” such as gay marriage, and wanking.
