Two Catholic nuns accused of embezzling $500,000 from a school and using it to gamble

Nuns embezzling

On some level, this is probably morally wrong.

It seems like it probably is morally wrong for two catholic nuns to embezzle half a million dollars from a school.

A school which probably needs that money in order to educate children. And it seems even worse that those nuns would then gamble all the money away.

A recent audit of St. James Catholic School in Torrance, California, uncovered evidence that Sister Mary Margaret Kreuper and Sister Lana Chang had been taking money earmarked for the school and used it to travel and to gamble at casinos.

Not only that, but Kreuper was the principal, according to the Press Telegram.

And on some level, fair play to them. But on another level, they probably shouldn’t have done that. But who amongst us has not embezzled $500,000 from a school in order to finance a years-long gambling habit?

Church Monsignor Michael Meyers has told the media that this improper use of funds has been going back at least 10 years.

The nuns’ order, Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, has agreed to pay back the money in full — and it remains unclear whether or not either the school, or parents of the school, will press charges.
